Monachism in the first monasteries of North Caucasus before the middle of XIX century

Abstract

What happened in recent years changes in the life of our country have led to a reassessment of many social values. In search of national identity of the state and society began to actively revive church life. A special role in the history of the Russian Orthodox Church played a monastic activity that requires a study to be used in the present conditions the positive experience developed in the course of many centuries Orthodox monasteries as a spiritual and religious and social centers, centers of Orthodox culture. On the outskirts of mills monasteries were the centers of Orthodox culture in different periods of prosperity and decline of Christianity, and sometimes complete disappearance. In the propagation of Orthodoxy in a multicultural and multi-confessional region, as was the North Caucasus, the monasteries were assigned to missionary function. With great authority, they had an impact on all spheres of life of these areas, and you can join instructing the population to Christianity contact zones. In the North Caucasus the monastic life had its own characteristics and traditions different from other regions of Central Russia. Involvement of previously unpublished sources allowed hold and reconstruct the activities of monasteries, to determine their role in the colonization of the region. The history of the Russian Orthodox Church in the North Caucasus is significant not only as an independent subject of study, but also as an integral part of civil history, objective examination of which is impossible without consideration of monasticism in the region.
